What Self-Care Is (and what it isn’t!)

Self-Love + Empowerment
March 08, 20224 min read

Self care is not chocolate covered strawberries and bubble baths. While these things can definitely be perks when it comes to rewarding yourself, they in themselves are not what self care is.

Self care is making choices that support a healthy lifestyle and bright future. That pack of cigarettes you’re working on may feel good in the moment, but it is hurting you in the long run. Creating problems within your body that you cannot yet see, shaving years off of your life and stealing precious energy and moments from you in the present. Take it from me, quitting may seem hard now, but the health issues in your future are worse.

Self care is not giving yourself unrealistic fitness goals like hitting the gym every day this month, then feeling like a failure when you don’t achieve it…because it was unrealistic.

Self care is making sure to move your body everyday, even if it’s just 15 minutes. Drink as much water as you can, however you can do it. I’m a bottled water fan myself, but my sister does great with one of the marked jugs she keeps with her. I am historically against “dieting” but do encourage you to pay attention to what you’re putting into your body. Our food is our fuel, so make sure you’re not surviving on hot Cheetos and Dr Pepper. Daily stretching in the morning, even if it’s just for 5 or 10 minutes, can be a great way to start your day.

If you don’t love yourself, nobody will. Not only that, you won’t be good at loving anyone else. Loving starts with the self.

Wayne Dyer

Self care is not blowing off spending time with friends and family to binge Netflix again. No, just don’t do it! Not only is it hurting your mental health (face-to-face interaction is so good for us!) but it could also be damaging your relationships. When my depression rears it’s ugly head, I can clam up, hide away from people and loved ones alike. I want to recluse away, but time and time again, that only worsens my mental state. Getting out of the house, having a laugh and getting away from your “to-do list” can be just what you need to snap out of a funk!

Self care is making time for the things that replenish your energy and bring you joy. In today’s world, burnout is a real threat. We we are all running at warp speed doing a 1000 things at once it seems. If we do not take breaks and make time for things that make us happy, we will end up resentful and angry at the things that once brought us joy. It can be anything such as a walk in the park, a coffee date with a pal, a quick snuggle session with your furriest friend, taking a 20 minute break to listen to your favorite podcast or audiobook or any other thing that lights your fire and motivates you.

Self care is not giving your all, all of the time. If you do this, you will end up empty. We as adults, and even more so as women, are encouraged to give until there’s nothing left. To sacrifice ourselves in the name of being “self-less” and caring. I don’t know about you, but I have seen that lifestyle, that level of giving take women to an early grave. They gave so much of themselves to everyone else, they never cared for their own health, wants, needs or dreams. I don’t want that life for myself or my girls.

Self care is knowing your boundaries and what deserves your energy. Valuing your time is a big part of self care, and knowing what deserves your attention. If you give in to everything that demands your attention, all of the time, no wonder you’re feeling mentally exhausted. We have to take time for ourselves, to refill our tanks and cups.

To accept ourselves as we are means to value our imperfections as much as our perfections.
